The strongest TaxJar alternative depends on why you are leaving. If the problem is support and filing reliability, a per-filing service with a penalty guarantee — Numeral or Kintsugi — changes the risk model most. If you have outgrown TaxJar and need an enterprise engine with managed returns, Avalara Select is the established option. If you mostly need return-ready reports and Streamlined Sales Tax coverage, TaxCloud is the lighter swap. Prices below were checked on each vendor’s official pricing page on 2026-09-26.

This guide is the third leg of our tax-compliance series. Amazon FBA taxes and Form 1099-K covers federal income reporting; best Amazon VAT services covers EU and UK VAT providers. This one covers US state sales tax automation — the software that calculates, reports and files state returns — and does not repeat either of those.

First: What Amazon Already Does for You

Before comparing any TaxJar alternative, separate what Amazon handles from what stays with you. Under marketplace facilitator legislation, Amazon calculates, collects and remits state sales tax on third-party orders in the states where that legislation applies; Amazon documents this on its Marketplace Tax Collection help page.

That changes the job a sales tax tool does for an Amazon seller:

  • Amazon-only sellers mostly need the tool to prove that Amazon-collected tax is excluded, monitor whether any state still expects a registration or a zero return from you, and keep an audit trail. TaxJar’s own support page describes this role: “Your Marketplace sales will be reflected accurately in your reports so that you’re not paying twice for sales tax the Marketplace has already remitted.” (TaxJar Support, Marketplace Facilitator: Amazon FAQ, checked 2026-09-26.)
  • Multichannel sellers — Amazon plus a Shopify, WooCommerce or wholesale channel — have real collection and filing obligations on the non-Amazon sales, and whether Amazon sales count toward a state’s economic nexus threshold varies by state. This is where calculation accuracy and filing reliability start to cost money.

If you sell only on Amazon, the cheapest defensible stack may be a free nexus-monitoring tier plus an accountant, not a paid filing plan. The accounting side of that decision is mapped in best Amazon accounting software, and for a deeper walk-through of the collection rules see Amazon FBA sales tax: what you need to know.

Why Sellers Look for a TaxJar Alternative

We read the 17 TaxJar reviews in our review corpus (Trustpilot, Capterra and G2). Three patterns account for almost all of the complaints, and none of them is about price alone.

1. Support is email-only and slow. TaxJar’s pricing page lists “Email support with a guaranteed response time” on Starter and adds phone support only on Professional (checked 2026-09-26). Reviewers on lower tiers describe the gap bluntly: “An issue that could be resolved over the phone in one call has taken multiple emails and weeks still with no resolution.” (Trustpilot, 2025-10-13.) Another: “their support reps take 2 days to respond on average.” (Trustpilot, 2024-04-30.)

2. Calculation and filing errors that surface late. The most serious review in the set: “Our account shows that returns were filed and sales tax paid every month, come to find out, that didn’t happen. We were delinquent by over $10k to the state.” (Trustpilot, 2025-05-16.) That is one reviewer’s account, not a verified incident, but it matches a G2 review summary describing calculation errors that led to penalties, and a Trustpilot reviewer who wrote that “TaxJar is producing inconsistent and incorrect tax calculations” (2023-05-09). Capterra reviewers also describe TaxJar calculating higher rates than Shopify and lacking support for partial exemptions.

3. The Stripe acquisition. Stripe announced it would acquire TaxJar on 27 April 2021, describing it as a future “pillar of Stripe’s revenue platform” (Stripe newsroom). TaxJar’s pricing page now tells prospects that “If you are a Stripe customer, Stripe Tax might be a good fit for your business.” A Capterra review summary describes a decline in team quality after the acquisition, and another says setup and integration support moved to a self-service model. Those are reviewer views, but they explain why sellers who are not Stripe merchants ask whether TaxJar’s roadmap still points at them.

For a seller choosing a multi-year compliance vendor, product direction matters as much as today’s feature list.

The Alternatives in Detail

Avalara Select — the enterprise engine, now priced per state

Avalara’s blog post of 19 August 2026 describes Avalara Select as a plan for businesses “up to $50 million in annual revenue.” Both tiers bundle AvaTax real-time calculation with “Avalara Managed Returns: preparation, filing, remittance, and state correspondence handled on your behalf.” Core Compliance + SST Services is “$699 per state, per year” with no state minimum; Core Compliance is “$799 per state, per year” with a three-state minimum per filing entity.

Trade-off: per-state pricing is predictable, but it scales with every state you register in. A seller filing in eight states pays eight times the headline. Avalara also sells registration at $403 per location (pricing page, checked 2026-09-26).

Numeral — per-filing pricing with a penalty guarantee

Numeral’s Professional plan is “$75 per filing + $150 per registration” and states: “Your sales tax will be filed on time, or we’ll pay your penalties and interest charges.” It lists “Native integrations with Shopify, Stripe, Amazon, QuickBooks, and dozens more,” and its free Monitoring tier runs a nexus study on connected stores.

Trade-off: the guarantee directly answers the failure pattern in TaxJar’s worst reviews — but read the terms for what “filed on time” covers if your own data is wrong. Per-filing pricing gets expensive for monthly filers in many states.

Kintsugi — no contract, pay per filing

Kintsugi’s pricing page advertises “Sales tax filing from $75 per state — no onboarding fees, no transaction fees, no annual contracts,” with a free AI-powered nexus monitoring tier. Filings and registrations are charged individually. Its guarantee page states: “If a calculation we made or a filing error of ours leads to penalties or interest, we pay it.”

Trade-off: no transaction fees suits sellers with high order counts and few states. Its pricing page does not mention Amazon, so confirm how it treats marketplace-facilitated orders before migrating.

Zamp — managed service, price on request

Zamp’s paid U.S. plan covers “Rooftop-accurate tax calculations,” “Proactive nexus monitoring & registration,” “Automated filing & remittance” and “End-to-End Notice Management,” with a “Dedicated account manager” on all paid plans. Prices are not published; the free tier is a one-time nexus analysis and a 30-minute consultation.

Trade-off: the opposite of TaxJar’s self-service model, which is the point if support was your reason to leave. You cannot compare cost without a quote.

TaxCloud — reports and SST at the low end

TaxCloud’s Starter plan is “For businesses on Shopify or Stripe that need sales tax reporting and filing,” with “Return ready sales tax reports for all states,” Streamlined Sales Tax access and “Phone and email support.” Filing subscriptions start “at $39/mo,” with a pay-as-you-go option; a surcharge applies for Colorado and Louisiana filings.

Trade-off: phone support at the entry tier is a direct contrast with TaxJar Starter. Real-time calculation and API access sit on the higher Premium plan.

How to Choose: Four Questions

  1. Do you sell outside Amazon? If not, start with a free monitoring tier (Numeral, Kintsugi or Zamp) and pay for filing only where a state requires it.
  2. How many states do you file in, and how often? Per-state and per-filing pricing wins at a few states; subscription pricing wins at many monthly filings. Price the next 12 months of actual filings, not the headline.
  3. Who pays if a return is late or wrong? Numeral and Kintsugi both publish a penalty-and-interest guarantee. For everyone else, ask for the clause in writing, and for all of them read how the contract defines an error that is theirs rather than yours.
  4. What support channel do you need at your tier? If a phone call on a filing problem matters, TaxCloud Starter includes it; TaxJar only adds it at Professional.

Switching Checklist

  • Export every filed return and transaction report from TaxJar before cancelling
  • List your current registrations and filing frequencies by state
  • Confirm the new tool excludes Amazon marketplace-facilitated sales, with a test report
  • Run one filing period in parallel before turning off AutoFile
  • Check the first filed return on the state portal yourself, not in the vendor dashboard

The last step matters most: the seller in the $10k review learned from the state, not the software. The same detection-lag lesson appears in our VAT services guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best TaxJar alternative for Amazon sellers?

For Amazon-only sellers, a free nexus-monitoring tier plus an accountant is often enough, because Amazon remits tax in marketplace facilitator states. Multichannel sellers who want filing accountability should look at Numeral or Kintsugi (per filing) or Avalara Select (per state).

How much does TaxJar cost in 2026?

TaxJar Starter is $39/mo for 200 orders a month with 2 AutoFile credits a year (extra credits $50); Professional is $99/mo, per TaxJar’s pricing page on 2026-09-26. Annual billing saves 10% or more.

Is TaxJar owned by Stripe?

Yes. Stripe announced the acquisition on 27 April 2021, and TaxJar’s pricing page now points Stripe customers to Stripe Tax.

Do I still need sales tax software if Amazon collects it?

Not always. You still need to know where you have nexus, whether any state expects a registration, and how non-Amazon sales are taxed. See Form 1099-K for Amazon sellers for the income-tax side and ecommerce accountants for Amazon sellers for professional help.

Conclusion

Leaving TaxJar is rarely about the $39 headline. It is about support access, filing reliability and a product now positioned inside Stripe. Match the replacement to that reason: guarantee-backed per-filing pricing (Numeral, Kintsugi), managed per-state compliance (Avalara Select, Zamp), or low-cost reporting with phone support (TaxCloud). Whatever you choose, verify your first filing on the state portal. Everything above reflects vendor pages checked on 2026-09-26 and is not tax advice — confirm your obligations with a licensed accountant.
