Amazon vacation mode is the Vacation Settings page in Seller Central that switches your listing status to Inactive. Per Amazon’s own help page, it removes your self-fulfilled (FBM) listings from product detail pages and search results within one hour, while Fulfillment by Amazon listings stay active. It does not cancel pending orders, does not pause the 24-hour deadline for return requests and buyer messages, and does not stop the monthly Professional subscription fee (data checked 2026-10-02, Seller Central help G200135620).

This guide walks through the setting step by step, lists everything that keeps running while you are away, and ends with a checklist for leaving and coming back. Everything below comes from Amazon’s help page and posts by Amazon staff on Seller Forums; where Amazon says nothing (rankings, Buy Box, maximum duration), this guide says so rather than guessing.

What Amazon Vacation Mode Does and Does Not Stop

Amazon’s help page, titled “Listing status for vacations, holidays, and other absences,” frames the feature narrowly. It opens: “If you can’t fulfill orders for any reason (family emergency, inclement weather, going on holiday or vacation, etc.), you can change your Listings Status to Inactive. This will remove your self-fulfilled listings from Amazon product detail pages and search results within one hour.” The page states it applies to selling in the United States (checked 2026-10-02).

So “vacation mode” is not an account freeze. It is a listing-visibility switch for the orders you ship yourself. The table below sorts what the help page says changes and what it says does not.

Amazon also explains why the feature exists. A News_Amazon post on Seller Forums titled “Use vacation mode to protect your account health” says that, without the setting, missed shipments can hurt late shipment rate, valid tracking rate, order defect rate and pre-fulfillment cancellation rate (thread, read 2026-10-02). Those are the seller-fulfilled metrics covered in our Account Health Rating guide.

How to Turn On Amazon Seller Vacation Settings

The current US help page gives this path: “From your seller account, select Settings > Account settings. In the Store Status section, go to Account Overview and click Vacation Settings.” (checked 2026-10-02).

  1. Check pending orders first. The help page says pending orders “will not automatically be canceled” and adds: “You might want to set your listing status to Inactive prior to the date you will be away, since pending orders may take time to resolve.”
  2. Open Vacation Settings via Settings > Account settings > Store Status > Account Overview > Vacation Settings.
  3. One marketplace: the help page says you will see the marketplace with an Active and an Inactive radio button. Select Inactive, then Save.
  4. Several marketplaces: you can set all of them at once with the Active or Inactive button at the top of the table, or set each marketplace with the radio button next to it, then Save.
  5. Wait one hour. In the help page’s words: “Wait one hour for your changes to take effect on Amazon product detail pages and search results.”

Who can do it. “Listings Status can only be edited by users who have been granted the right to manage inventory.” If a team member or VA handles your store, check their permissions before you leave; the setup is covered in Amazon seller account user roles and permissions.

Labels differ between sources. Older Amazon staff posts describe the same feature with different wording. Jessica_Amazon_’s “Quick Tip: Vacation settings” post uses the Seller Account Information page and “Off Vacation” / “On vacation” buttons per country (thread); Cooper_Amazon’s “Listing Lounge” post describes a toggle on a “Store Status and Vacation Settings” page (thread). Both posts are three years old. On the same forum, a seller asked in late September 2026 where vacation settings sit on “the new dashboard,” so expect menu names to move. The underlying action, setting listings to Inactive per marketplace, is the same in every version.

What Keeps Running While You Are on Vacation

This is the part most sellers get wrong. Inactive listings stop new FBM orders from arriving; they do not switch off your obligations.

Pending orders. Anything already ordered still has to ship on time. Turn the setting on early enough that every open order is shipped and confirmed before you leave.

Returns and buyer messages. The help page’s “Things to remember while your listings are inactive” section says: “You must process return requests and respond to messages from customers within 24 hours, even if your listings are set to Inactive.” It points to two aids: return request emails “with links to Authorize, Close, or Reply,” and having “Amazon automatically authorize return requests.” If you cannot check messages daily, set up return automation before you go and arrange cover for the inbox.

Claims and chargebacks. Amazon’s page does not mention A-to-z Guarantee claims. A seller replying in the News_Amazon thread pointed out that vacation mode does not stop return and refund requests, A-to-z claims or chargebacks (a seller’s statement, read 2026-10-02). Nothing on Amazon’s page says claims pause, so plan as if they keep arriving; response handling is covered in our A-to-z Guarantee claims guide.

The subscription fee. The help page note reads: “Any applicable monthly subscription fees will continue to be charged, even if the fees are due while your listings are inactive.” Amazon’s alternative is to “downgrade your account from a Professional selling plan to an Individual selling plan.” On sell.amazon.com/pricing, Professional is listed at “$39.99 / month” and Individual at “$0.99 / item sold” (US, data checked 2026-10-02). Before downgrading for a short break, read Individual vs Professional plan: Professional-only features go away while you are on Individual.

Listing work. “You can still create and edit listings while your listings are Inactive. Additions and changes will be reflected on Amazon when you change your Listings Status back to Active.” A quiet week is a reasonable time to fix titles and images.

FBA, FBM and Mixed Accounts: Who Vacation Mode Covers

FBA-only sellers. The setting does not take FBA offers offline: “If you have any Fulfillment by Amazon listings, they will remain active on Amazon.” Amazon picks, packs and ships those orders, so an FBA-only seller usually does not need vacation mode for fulfillment. Buyer messages still need answers, and our FBA customer service guide covers what Amazon handles and what stays with you.

FBM sellers. This is the group the feature was built for. Every self-fulfilled offer drops out of search and detail pages within an hour, which protects your shipping metrics because no new orders arrive.

Mixed accounts. If you sell some ASINs through FBA and others through FBM, vacation mode turns off only the FBM side; FBA offers keep selling. The trade-offs between the two models are covered in FBA vs FBM.

Seller Fulfilled Prime. SFP offers are shipped by the seller, so they count as self-fulfilled listings. The help page has no SFP-specific instructions. If you run SFP, read the operating rules in our Seller Fulfilled Prime guide before planning an absence around peak season.

Fulfillment network disruptions. Vacation mode is also one of the options Amazon suggests for major fulfillment network disruptions in its Business Hour Delivery Rate FAQ: “such as pausing listings, going on vacation mode, or shifting inventory to other locations that are not affected” (checked 2026-10-02). That metric is explained in Amazon Business Hour Delivery Rate.

How to Turn Vacation Mode Off and Come Back

Coming back is the same flow in reverse. The help page says: “When you are ready to sell again, change your Listings Status back to active by repeating the steps above on the Vacation Settings page. This time select Active instead of Inactive and your listings will reappear within one hour.”

Three practical points:

  • Reactivate before you can ship. Orders can arrive as soon as listings reappear. Switch back once you can meet your handling time.
  • Check each marketplace. If you set marketplaces one by one, switch each one back. Setting “all marketplaces” from the top of the table is the simplest way to make sure none stays Inactive.
  • Check the result. Search your own storefront after an hour. Any listing edits you made while away go live at the same time.

What Amazon Does Not Say

Amazon’s help page and the staff posts above are silent on several questions sellers ask most:

  • Rankings and Buy Box. No Amazon page cited here says whether time Inactive affects search rank, Best Sellers Rank or Featured Offer eligibility. A seller replying to Cooper_Amazon’s Listing Lounge thread wrote: “There are MANY that claim it takes days/weeks for the listings to start selling again when they come back” (a seller’s statement, read 2026-10-02). This guide does not put a number on recovery time because Amazon has not published one.
  • Maximum duration. Amazon publishes no time limit for staying Inactive on this page.
  • Scheduling. The help page describes no way to schedule the switch ahead of time; you turn it on and off yourself.
  • Single-SKU vacation. The setting works per marketplace, not per listing. To pause specific FBM offers, you need to change those listings individually.

Pre-Vacation Checklist

Use this list two to three days before you leave:

  1. Ship and confirm every pending FBM order; Amazon will not cancel them.
  2. Set listings to Inactive early enough that late orders can still ship on time.
  3. Confirm whoever touches the setting has inventory management rights.
  4. Turn on return request emails or automatic return authorization.
  5. Arrange for someone to answer buyer messages within 24 hours.
  6. Decide on the subscription: keep Professional, or downgrade and accept what you lose.
  7. Check FBA stock levels; those offers keep selling and can run out while you are away.
  8. Put a reminder in your calendar to switch every marketplace back to Active.

For peak season planning, combine this with our Q4 checklist.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming vacation mode cancels orders. It does not; pending orders still need shipping.
  • Ignoring the inbox. The 24-hour deadline for returns and messages applies while Inactive.
  • Expecting FBA to pause. FBA listings stay live; plan inventory accordingly.
  • Forgetting a marketplace. Multi-marketplace sellers can leave one store Inactive by accident.
  • Turning it on the night before. Changes take up to an hour, and orders placed before then still count.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Amazon vacation mode affect FBA listings?

No. Amazon’s help page says FBA listings “will remain active on Amazon.” Only self-fulfilled listings are removed (data checked 2026-10-02).

How long does it take for vacation settings to take effect?

Amazon says to wait one hour for the change to reach product detail pages and search results. Reactivated listings reappear within one hour.

Do I still pay the Professional fee while on vacation?

Yes. Amazon says applicable monthly subscription fees continue to be charged while listings are inactive; downgrading to Individual is the option it names to avoid the fee.

Do I have to answer messages while on vacation?

Yes. Amazon requires sellers to process return requests and respond to customer messages within 24 hours even while listings are Inactive.

Conclusion

Amazon seller vacation settings do one thing: they take your self-fulfilled listings offline within an hour. Orders already placed, return requests, buyer messages and the monthly fee all keep running, and FBA keeps selling. Ship everything open, cover the inbox, decide on the subscription, and set a reminder to switch every marketplace back to Active.
