Amazon shipping templates group the shipping regions, service levels, transit times, and rates used by seller-fulfilled offers. Create the template in Shipping settings, then assign the relevant SKUs; saving a template alone does not establish that those offers use it. These are FBM delivery settings, not instructions for sending inventory to an Amazon fulfillment center (Amazon template and assignment help, checked 2026-11-03).

The practical setup has three parts: configure the delivery lane, map the right SKUs to it, and check handling time separately. This guide follows Amazon’s US help documentation, not a logged-in account test. If your task is warehouse replenishment, use the FBA inbound shipping guide instead; the FBA versus FBM comparison explains the fulfillment split.

Amazon Shipping Templates: What Each Setting Controls

Amazon’s create, edit, or delete instructions describe the following controls (US documentation checked 2026-11-03):

ControlWhat you configureWhat to verify operationally
Shipping optionEnabled domestic or international services, such as ExpeditedA carrier service actually supports the promise
Deliverable regionsRegions and relevant sub-regions grouped into a ruleEvery included destination is serviceable
Address typeAddress types covered by the regional ruleYour carrier accepts those addresses
Shipping timeTransit time in business days for the regionsThe selected service supports that transit time
Shipping ratesCustomer-facing shipping charges under the selected rate modelCharges match your intended offer economics
SKU assignmentWhich merchant-fulfilled offers use the templateThe inventory mapping matches the intended group

A template is a reusable offer configuration, not a carrier contract or a postage purchase. A free-shipping template name also tells you nothing about the actual saved rates: inspect the rules rather than relying on the label.

Group products by the delivery operation they share. Lightweight stock shipped from one location may belong together; a bulky product with different coverage deserves a separate review. Splitting every product into its own template makes changes harder to audit, while grouping incompatible products hides exceptions. The useful unit is a consistent fulfillment promise, not a product category for its own sake.

Create a Template Around a Real Delivery Lane

The current US workflow below comes from Amazon’s template help page, checked 2026-11-03. Start with your carrier coverage and dispatch process, then translate them into settings.

  1. Open Settings > Shipping settings. Check the default shipping address under General shipping settings before creating the template. An incorrect origin is a reason to stop and resolve the configuration before assigning products.
  2. Open Shipping Templates > Create New Shipping Template. Amazon also documents copying content from an existing template. Copy when the existing regional structure is useful; review every inherited service and rate afterward.
  3. Give the template an operational name. For example, use a name that identifies the origin and service group rather than a vague label such as New Template. Keep the name in your internal SKU mapping sheet.
  4. Choose the available rate model. Amazon lists Per item/weight-based, or Weight-tiered, with the latter available only to freight shipping templates. Do not assume a freight-specific option appears for an ordinary parcel template.
  5. Review Prime and same-day handling controls. Amazon directs sellers to separate Seller Fulfilled Prime configuration instructions for Prime delivery. A checkbox in a setup guide is not evidence that every account or SKU qualifies for that program.
  6. Configure shipping options, regions, address types, transit times, and rates. Enable the services you intend to offer. Under Regions, use Edit or Add New shipping rule and select the relevant sub-regions. Save the completed rules.

Amazon’s documentation allows multiple rules for the same shipping option to customize settings by region. Use that structure when one delivery area has different costs or transit times from another. Avoid treating a state-level selection as proof that every sub-region has the intended settings; the help page specifically calls attention to sub-regions.

Before saving, read each row as a promise: this service, to these destinations and address types, in this transit time, at this customer charge. That sentence exposes missing assumptions much faster than checking the template name.

Assign SKUs and Verify the Mapping

Amazon’s Assign SKUs to shipping templates page documents inventory changes, bulk feeds, and assignment verification. The steps and field names below were checked 2026-11-03.

Change selected offers in inventory

In Manage All Inventory, select the SKUs, open Action on X selected, and choose Change shipping template. Amazon documents up to 50 changes at a time through this tool. Treat the selection as a controlled batch: confirm the fulfillment method and the intended template before applying it.

For verification, Amazon says the template name appears beneath the price in the Price and shipping cost column. You can also select a SKU, click Edit, and find Merchant Shipping Group on the Offer tab. The help page says this field displays only when the ASIN is set to Fulfilled by Merchant. If the field is absent, check the fulfillment method before looking for a missing template.

Use a report for a catalog-wide check

Amazon documents the merchant-shipping-group column in the Active Listings report as an assignment check. Download the report from Inventory Reports and compare that column with your intended SKU groups. Keep the report as a before-and-after record when moving a large set of offers.

The assignment page also lists merchant_shipping_group_name in the Inventory Loader for bulk changes. Use the current file instructions and inspect the processing result; do not confuse that upload field with the differently punctuated report column. They serve related jobs but are not interchangeable headers.

Build a small mapping sheet with SKU, fulfillment method, previous template, intended template, and verification result. After applying a batch, check both a representative normal SKU and any exceptions. A saved template plus an unchecked upload is still an unverified migration.

Handling Time Is a Separate Check

Amazon’s Modify handling time page separates handling time, from order placement to carrier handoff, from transit time, the delivery journey. Both contribute to the customer delivery estimate (checked 2026-11-03).

The same page describes an important precedence order:

  • SKU-specific handling time overrides the account default.
  • Automated handling time overrides both SKU-specific and default handling times, subject to shipping-history limitations and approved exceptions.
  • Default handling time is the fallback, rather than proof that every SKU has that handling time.

The template creation page does include a Same day selection under Handling Time Settings. That does not make the regional transit-time rule the master control for every SKU’s handling configuration. Check the effective product-level setting as well as the template.

To inspect automated handling configuration, Amazon documents Settings > Shipping settings > General shipping settings > Edit beside Handling time. Its handling-time help also points to the Handling time report on the Product-level shipping preferences page for a SKU-wide view (checked 2026-11-03).

If a promise looks too slow, determine whether the delay comes before or after carrier handoff. Shortening regional transit time cannot make a made-to-order item ready sooner. Likewise, changing the account default may not change an offer whose automated or SKU-specific setting takes precedence. Diagnose the layer first; otherwise, a faster-looking template can conceal the original dispatch bottleneck.

Edit, Replace, or Delete Without Losing Track

Amazon’s template instructions give the edit path as Settings > Shipping Settings > select template > Edit Template > Save. They also provide Revision History in the dropdown beside Edit Template for reviewing previous changes (checked 2026-11-03).

Treat an edit as a change to the configuration used by the assigned SKU group. Before modifying a shared regional rule, export or record the assignment list and identify which offers are meant to inherit the new configuration. If only one subset needs a different service, create a separate template and move that subset instead of silently redefining the existing group’s promise.

A clean replacement sequence is:

  1. Record the old rules and current SKU assignments.
  2. Create and review the replacement configuration.
  3. Move only the intended SKUs.
  4. Verify the new mapping in inventory or the Active Listings report.
  5. Inspect the offer’s shipping charge and delivery estimate for relevant destinations.
  6. Retire the old template only after the assignment check is complete.

Amazon explicitly requires reassigning SKUs before deleting their template. Its help page also says the default shipping template and migrated template cannot be deleted (checked 2026-11-03). A blocked deletion therefore calls for two checks: whether SKUs remain assigned and whether the template is one of the protected types. Repeatedly clicking Delete does not resolve either condition.

Diagnose the Wrong Promise Before Changing Rates

Use the symptom to choose the next check rather than rebuilding all settings.

SymptomFirst checkNext check
The intended shipping charge is absentActual SKU-to-template assignmentMatching region, address type, and service rule
Only some products show the new setupWhich SKUs were selected or uploadedInventory/report mapping after the change
Delivery looks slower than expectedEffective handling time and overridesTransit rule for that destination
A template field is missingMerchant-fulfilled versus FBA offerCorrect inventory edit context
A template cannot be deletedRemaining SKU assignmentsDefault or migrated template status

These are troubleshooting priorities, not guarantees about every possible account state. Check the saved configuration against the offer you are actually viewing, including destination and fulfillment method.

For a temporary warehouse absence, decide whether you need different shipping promises or a listing-status change. The Amazon vacation settings guide covers that separate control. A shipping-rate edit and vacation status answer different operational questions; do not use one as a substitute for investigating the other.

Pre-Launch Checklist

Before expanding a change across your FBM catalog:

  • Confirm the marketplace, origin, and merchant-fulfilled SKU group.
  • Review enabled services, regions, sub-regions, and address types.
  • Check transit times against the actual carrier service.
  • Check customer charges rather than template names.
  • Review same-day settings and the effective handling-time source.
  • Record old assignments before moving offers.
  • Verify the new assignments through inventory or the Active Listings report.
  • Inspect relevant destination examples on the offer.
  • Save a change note identifying the affected SKU group and rules.

The handoff is complete when the saved rules, SKU mapping, and effective handling settings tell the same story—not when the template creation dialog closes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do FBA sellers need shipping templates to send inventory to Amazon?

No. The assignment help says the template field appears for Fulfilled by Merchant offers (checked 2026-11-03). Sending stock to Amazon is a separate inbound workflow, covered in how to ship to Amazon FBA.

Does creating a template automatically move my existing SKUs?

Creation and assignment are separate steps in Amazon’s documentation (checked 2026-11-03). Verify the actual template name on each intended SKU or use the Active Listings report rather than assuming a new template changed existing mappings.

Can a shipping template override automated handling time?

Amazon’s handling-time page says automated handling overrides manual SKU-specific and default handling settings, with documented exceptions (checked 2026-11-03). Review that effective handling configuration separately from the template’s regional transit rules.

Why can I not delete an old shipping template?

Amazon requires reassigning its SKUs first and does not allow deleting default or migrated templates (checked 2026-11-03). Check both conditions before treating the deletion failure as a technical error.
