The Amazon Merch on Demand size chart is not one size. Amazon organizes its templates by print dimension, and there are eleven of them — from 4500 x 5400 px for a standard t-shirt down to 850 x 75 px for a 12-pack of retractable pens. Every figure below comes from Amazon’s own Merch on Demand resource pages, read on 2026-09-05.
One thing to settle before you open Photoshop: per-product exports used to be mandatory and are not any more. The dimensions still define what gets printed, but the upload no longer has to match them exactly — the detail most outdated guides miss, covered further down.
The Amazon Merch on Demand size chart
Amazon’s templates page states the organizing principle: “Templates are organized by print dimensions. For example, all t-shirts, sweatshirts, long sleeve t-shirts and the back of pullover hoodies are in one template” (merch.amazon.com, data checked 2026-09-05).

The inches column is arithmetic, not a separate Amazon figure: Amazon instructs creators to “Output your artwork file at 100% of the print dimensions at 300dpi” — so pixels divided by 300 is the printed size by Amazon’s own rule. Amazon confirms the apparel width independently, referring to “the entire 15” width" for garments — exactly 4500 ÷ 300.
One row catches people out. Hoodies are split across two templates because front and back print at different dimensions: the back of a pullover or zip hoodie sits in the 4500 x 5400 group, the front in 4500 x 4050.
What Amazon requires of the file itself
The templates page states three file requirements verbatim: “PNG format with transparency”, “sRGB color space” and “Less than 25 MB”. The Best Practices page adds resolution and color mode:
- 300 DPI at 100% scale. “When designing your artwork, create the files at 100% of the print dimensions at 300 DPI. This will ensure a sharp image that isn’t blurry or pixelated.”
- RGB, not CMYK. “Create your final artwork in RGB: This will produce a greater range of colors when printed on the different products.” The design-editor guidance is more specific: “RGB color, 8 bits/channel”.
- Do not upscale. “Remember to not scale artwork up (unless it is a vector file) as this will also cause pixelation.”
- True black is #000000. “The richest black you can achieve is R-0 G-0 B-0 or #000000”.
Note the direction of travel: you design in RGB, and Amazon converts to CMYK for printing on some products. That conversion is why Amazon warns that “RGB screen colors appear more vibrant onscreen than CMYK colors printed on products” — the mockup does the selling, and a visibly duller garment comes back as a return.
Exact-size uploads are no longer required
This is the most out-of-date claim in circulation, and Amazon corrects it on its own Best Practices page: “Merch’s product templates previously required specific artwork for each product type. You can still use these templates to preview what your artwork will look like on specific products, but you are no longer required to export or upload specific sizes” (data checked 2026-09-05).
What replaced it is a global uploader: “The new design editor allows you to upload artwork with any dimension (greater than 485 x 485 pixels) to use on every product. Artwork will automatically scale to fit and center on each product.” Amazon still recommends starting big — “at least 4500 pixels” — because the editor scales down, never up: the scale slider is capped at 100% of your original dimension. Upload a 900 px file and every large-format product is stuck at postage-stamp size.
One further instruction changes how you export: “we recommend removing all extra blank or transparent pixels, trimming your file to the edges of your design. Trimming allows the Merch design editor’s centering tools to work as expected.” A design inside a 4500 x 5400 canvas with wide transparent margins may carry only 3500 x 3500 px of real artwork, so trimming and resizing yields a bigger print from a smaller file.
The size chart above is still what you design against. It describes the print target now, not the upload requirement.
Apparel: where the print area actually starts
Pixel dimensions say nothing about placement on a body, and Amazon publishes that separately. The baseline: “In general, the print area on the front of garments start 1.5” down from the bottom of the collar on the front, and 3" down from the collar on the back." The exceptions Amazon names:
- V-neck t-shirts — “The top of the print area is 1.5” from the tip of the V on the collar." Same file, but the placement “will visually look much lower.”
- Men’s raglan baseball tees — the crewneck and full-length sleeves require “the top of the printing area to start 2.5” down from the collar and a slightly reduced print area."
- Zip hoodies — the front uses the same 4500 x 4050 file as a pullover hoodie “and will print across the zipper. We recommend that you do not put fine lines or small type across the zipper because the fabric may shift slightly during the printing process and distort the artwork.”
On width, Amazon argues against filling the canvas: “While you can certainly use the entire 15” width, often customers find that to be overwhelming. In general, keeping your maximum dimension to 12 inches or less results in better centering on the garments." At 300 DPI that is 3600 px of a 4500 px canvas. Amazon adds that apparel designs “typically do the best when they are placed near the top of the print area.”
Full-bleed products behave differently
Amazon names them: “Our current full bleed products are PopSockets, phone cases, tote bags, and throw pillows.” On these, “the printable area is the entire surface of the product”, and two boundaries matter instead of one. The printable area is “the physical area on a product that can be printed” (gray dashed rectangle); the safe zone “is where you should place the most important parts of your design. Design content outside of the safe zone is still printed, but might be cut off or obscured by seams, cut lines, or camera holes” (red dashed rectangle). On apparel the rule is blunter: “You can make your artwork larger than the printable area, but it will be cut off.”
PopSockets have their own official FAQ, the most specific spec sheet Amazon publishes for a single product: “We require a 485px x 485px PNG. Square artwork will be masked to print a circular design after you upload your artwork.” The grip is 1.56 inches in diameter, so the square file is deliberately larger than the printed circle. Amazon’s instruction for that gap: “make sure to extend the background of your design to the entire 485 x 485 pixel image.” Skip it and “there will be white strips on the edge of the printed product.” The transparency trap is flagged directly too: “If you upload an image that has white in the artwork with a transparent background, then some of the image may be lost.”
Placement guidance flips as well. Apparel wants the design high in the print area; “For PopSockets, center designs across the whole area.”
Minimum type and line weights
A correct canvas will not save type too fine to survive direct-to-garment printing. Amazon publishes minimums for four product groups:

Amazon publishes no minimums for the other groups — mugs, tote bags, hats, journals, phone cases, backpacks and pens had no published figure we could find on 2026-09-05, so treat the nearest comparable group as a working assumption, not a rule. Amazon’s own fallback applies: “If you have questions on how your artwork will print, it is recommended to create and order a sample of the product you would like to sell.”
Five ways a correctly sized design still fails
Amazon’s Guide to Merch Product Quality lists what gets listings removed (all quoted, data checked 2026-09-05).
- Transparency used as a background. “Fully transparent artwork” is disallowed outright, and on full-bleed products transparency where a background belongs produces the white edge strip described above.
- Insufficient resolution. “Images that are blurry or contain low resolution” and “Designs with blurred lines, unclean backgrounds, or watermarks” — the downstream cost of upscaling a small file to fill a 4500 px canvas.
- Design color matching garment color. “Content obscured and/or illegible due to the design color matching the selected product color. Examples include blue text on a blue shirt.” Best Practices adds the subtler version: near-matches “may not print as expected” and can “print a halo with a hard edge”.
- A single color across the whole print area. “Designs where a single color is applied to a product’s full print area” is disallowed, and the PopSockets FAQ repeats it — solid-color designs “are not allowed because the color does not cover the sides of the button”.
- Typos. “Artwork with typos” heads Amazon’s artwork issues list.
Two adjacent traps sit in metadata rather than the file. Amazon’s content policy disallows “Content that references product, fulfillment, or delivery attributes”, and the quality guide bans implying print effects the process cannot deliver — “neon, metallic, foil, rose gold, gold, sparkling, glow, glows in black light, and glow in the dark” are named.
Pre-upload checklist
- Export PNG with transparency, RGB / sRGB at 8 bits per channel, under 25 MB.
- Build at 300 DPI at 100% of print dimensions; never scale up a raster file.
- Start from at least 4500 px on the long edge so the editor can scale down to every product.
- Trim all extraneous transparent pixels to the edge of the design before saving.
- For apparel, keep the largest dimension at or under 12 inches (3600 px) and weight the composition toward the top.
- For full-bleed products, extend the background to the bleed edge and keep essential content inside the safe zone.
- Check type against the 32 pt / 48 pt / 24 pt / 8 pt minimums for your target product.
- Compare the design color against every garment color you plan to enable, including near-matches.
- Proofread artwork and listing copy, and strip any reference to shipping, sizing, print effects or textures.

The size chart is the easy part. Amazon publishes it, it has not moved, and the templates are free. What removes listings is the layer underneath — resolution, transparency, color collision, and copy promising something the printer cannot deliver.
